Introduced in 1989 to replace the bulkier 16760 “Fat Lady,” the 16710 represents the last generation of GMT-Master II with aluminum bezel inserts, produced until 2007. Collectors prize it as the perfect bridge between vintage and modern Rolex—retaining the slimmer 40mm case profile of classic five-digit references while incorporating contemporary features like sapphire crystal and improved movement technology. The “LN” designation signifies “Lunette Noir” (black bezel in French), the most understated variant compared to colorful Pepsi and Coke siblings. Throughout its 18-year production run, the reference underwent gradual evolution: tritium gave way to Luminova then Super-LumiNova around 1998-2000, hollow end links upgraded to solid in 2000, drilled lugs disappeared in 2003, and late examples received Caliber 3186 replacing 3185.
The 40mm stainless steel case features bidirectional rotating black aluminum bezel with 24-hour graduations, 120-click action. Black lacquer dial with white gold surrounds on luminescent hour markers, Mercedes hands, red 24-hour GMT hand. Date window at 3 o’clock with Cyclops magnification.
