Description

The Grand Complications 5140 represents Patek Philippe’s refined evolution of the perpetual calendar complication, introduced in 2006 as the noble successor to the legendary reference 3940 that had defined the category since 1985 as the first highly complicated watch in regular production from the manufacture. The 5140G improved upon the groundbreaking original design by subtly increasing case diameter from 36mm to 37.2mm enabling enlarged calendar subdial at 6 o’clock for enhanced legibility, replacing the concave bezel with convex profile to accent perfect geometry of slightly larger case, while maintaining the ultra-thin profile and perfectly balanced dial layout that made its predecessor one of Patek Philippe’s most recognizable timepieces. Discontinued from the collection after a decade of production making way for reference 5327, the 5140G has transitioned into modern vintage status appealing to collectors who appreciate classical perpetual calendar design executed with contemporary refinement.

The 37.2mm case crafted in 18-karat white gold features polished surfaces with curved downturned lugs, rounded stepped bezel, pull-push winding crown engraved with Calatrava cross, scratch-resistant sapphire crystal, and choice of exhibition sapphire caseback or solid white gold caseback both included. The silver opaline dial displays applied polished white gold baton hour markers, white gold dauphine hands, printed minute track with white gold dots around outer rim, three recessed subsidiary dials with black Arabic numerals and white gold indicator hands showing day of week and 24-hour register at 9 o’clock, month and leap year indicators at 3 o’clock, date and moonphase displays at 6 o’clock featuring realistic moon against blue celestial background. Inside beats the self-winding Caliber 240 Q manufactured entirely in-house featuring ultra-thin construction at 3.88mm profile, off-center mini-rotor in 22-karat gold, perpetual calendar mechanism with mechanical memory spanning four years automatically accounting for months with 31 and 30 days plus February 29 leap years requiring no correction until year 2100, 27 jewels, 275 components, frequency of 21,600 vibrations per hour, approximately 48 hours of power reserve. Black alligator leather strap with 18-karat white gold deployant clasp, four recessed push-piece correctors in case sides for calendar adjustment using included Patek Philippe stylus.
